Fruits In Season This February

Apples

Apples are full of health benefits, after all “an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Packed full of fibre, vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants, eating apples is linked to a lower risk of many major diseases, including diabetes and cancer.

There are over 7,500 varieties of apples grown all over the world, some popular variants include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Gala, and of course the original ancestor Malus Sieversii; which is still in existence today.

Oranges

This delicious citrus fruit is native to China and has many health benefits. Firstly, they're high in vitamin C which means they are a superb addition to a balanced diet to help keep your blood pressure under check. However, they are also great fruits due to their assistance in helping to reduce the risk of cancer.

These aren't the only health benefits of eating oranges. Including them in your diet will also help to prevent skin damage, promote a healthy immune system, lower your cholesterol, and help keep your blood sugar levels under control.

Lemons

Native to South Asia, these citrus fruits are packed full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, including vitamin C and folate; making lemons a superb fruit and ingredient choice for kitchens in organisations such as schools and hospitals.

After all, the body cannot make vitamin C on its own, so foods containing this essential vitami are very important. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, it fights free radicals in the body which can help to prevent or delay certain cancers, heart disease, and promote healthy ageing. However, this is not all vitamin C is useful for, it also supports the epithelial barrier function against pathogens, further adding to its value as an ingredient in hospital cooking or on school menus.

Carrots

Native to Europe and Asia, this vegetable whilst typically thought of asorange can be found in a wide range of colours including purple, black, red, white, and yellow.Additionally, whilst many consider the idea that carrots can help you 'see inthe dark' to be a folktale and just an urban legend, it's actually true.Carrots are good sources of vitamin A, a vitamin which helps protect the cornea(the outer surface of the A). This means that a balanced diet with good sourcesof vitamin A will help the eyes to adjust between light and dark; as suchcarrots do in fact help you to see in the dark.

Turnips

Grown all over the world, the turnip is a very versatile vegetable. It can be enjoyed both cooked and raw; in fact it is delicious when served peeled and sliced as a salad topper.

Additionally, like all of the above fruits and vegetables, turnips are packed full of minerals and vitamins, including vitamins K, A, C, E, B1, B3, B5, B6, and B2. They're also a good source of phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein.
