1. Apples
Regular consumption of this fruit is very good for your health; in fact eating them is linked to a lower risk of many major diseases, including diabetes and cancer. So it's no wonder the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is so popular.

Did you know that, the apple tree originated in Asia? In fact its ancestor still exists today, Malus Sieversii. However this is but one variety of apple; 7,500 varieties of apples are grown all over the world.


2. Clementines

This citrus fruit is a hybrid between a mandarin and a sweet orange, and is named after it's discoverer; Clément Rodier. The Clementine is a member of the mandarin family and is notable for being the smallest of all mandarins and is seedless. They're also known for their mild flavour and ease of peeling, and can be enjoyed from November until around March.

3. Kiwis

Also known as the Chinese gooseberry, the kiwifruit is actually a berry and is found on several species of woody vines of the genus Actinidia. The most commonly available cultivar of kiwifruit is Hayward, which is egg shaped and has a very sweet flavour. Another popular and common cultivar is Saanichton 12 which is found in British Columbia and is comparable in sweetness to the Hayward, however it is somewhat rectangular in shape.


4. Lemons

A citrus fruit from small evergreen trees native to South Asia, these fruits are packed full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, including vitamin C and folate. Vitamin C is especially important as the body cannot make vitamin C on its own. This vitamin is an antioxidant, it fights free radicals in the body which can help to prevent or delay certain cancers, heart disease, and promote healthy ageing. However, this is not all vitamin C is useful for, it also supports the epithelial barrier function against pathogens, making vitamin C containing ingredients especially important for kitchens in organisations such as schools and hospitals.

5. Pears

The pear is not a single fruit but in fact a range of different edible fruit species. For example, some pears include the Forelle, Bosc, and Anjous Pears. There are numerous health benefits to eating pears, in addition to being fat and cholesterol free, they are also great sources of Vitamin C, potassium, and Vitamin K< which is needed for blood clotting (helps wounds heal properly) and there is some evidence vitamin K may help keep bones healthy.

1. Brussels Sprouts

Many believe that this Christmas staple gained its name from Belgium where it has long been popular in its capital city Brussels. Additionally, did you know that the sprout is actually a member of a group of cabbages, hence why they in fact look like miniature cabbages?


2. Carrots
Whilst normally found in orange, this European and Asian root vegetable can be found in purple, black, red, white, and yellow colours. Additionally, whilst considered by many to be a folktale, carrots are good sources of vitamin A, so they do in fact help you see in low-light conditions.

3. Celery

This marshland plant has cultivated by civilisations since antiquity. In fact, did you know that this vegetable is great for weight loss as a large stalk contains approximately just 10 calories?

4. Onions
Also known as the common onion, this bulb vegetable is the most widely cultivated species of its genius. Other relatives of this tasty vegetable include garlic, leek, chives, and shallots.

5. Squash

Squash is in fact not a vegetable itself but a family of vegetables, with many winter varieties including butternut squash, acorn, pumpkin, yellow squad, and courgette (also known as a zucchini in American English).
